World Cup Quarter Finals - Preview
The World Cup is sadly reaching its inevitable end and every football fan around the world is savouring every moment of every game. Next up are the quarter finals made up of 8 very strong teams, some of which are here by surprise while the presence of other teams is expected. We take a look at the four games we have ahead of us and what we can expect from each of them.
Uruguay vs France: 6th of July at 16:00 CET
Uruguay were given very tough competition by Portugal in the round of 16 but they managed to overcome them in a hard fought 2-1 victory. Both their goals were scored by striker Edinson Cavani who also had to leave the pitch due to injury, he is now a doubt for the quarter finals. Their opponents, France, were also challenged in their round of 16 game as their 4-3 victory over Argentina was highly entertaining and impossible to call as the game went on. Coming up against Uruguay’s attack they will want to tighten their defence somewhat but if Cavani is out they will be even bigger favourites than they are at the moment. This World Cup has been full of surprises and we should know by now that no results are given, especially not at this stage so this is definitely a game to look forward to. Expect a lot of attacking football with high speed and lots of entertainment!
Brazil vs Belgium: 6th of July at 20:00 CET
Brazil, one of the biggest favourites of them all delivered a solid game against Mexico to get to this stage, and Brazil fans will be very happy to see that Neymar is finally leading from the front again. Belgium on the other hand have looked solid all throughout the tournament but were really tested when they had to come back from a 2-goal deficit against Japan. Brazil are favourites as you would expect but this Belgium side will give them a run for their money. These are two teams with world class in pretty much every position and we are expecting to see a close game that will be decided by very small factors, maybe even another penalty shootout.
Sweden vs England: 7th of July at 16:00 CET
The Swedes have made it to this quarter final against most people’s expectations, the road here has not been easy at all but they’ve shown great determination and won their matches with teamwork, smartness and a bit of luck. It’s really hard to say how far a team like this can go when you don’t expect them to be here in the first place. England on the other half of the pitch are longing for some long-lost glory and they look better in this World Cup than in a very long time. Harry Kane is the tournament’s current top scorer and can inflict a lot of damage on any opponent. The speed of the Englishmen is also something Sweden will need to be careful with. England are the bookies’ favourites ahead of the game but Sweden have defied most odds thus far. This game will most likely be played like a chess game and once again the small details could be decisive.
Russia vs Croatia: 7th of July at 20:00 CET
“Russia will beat Spain on penalties and go through to the quarter finals of the World Cup”. Not many people would believe it but here they are. The hosts have used every ounce of strength and motivation in the home fans’ chants and they have defied everyone. Now they face one of the very strongest teams so far in the tournament, Croatia. The Croats have been very impressive in this World Cup, even if they had to overcome Denmark in a penalty shootout. Especially their midfielders have been dominating and their finishing has been lethal. The matchup between these two will be full of excitement and the battle for possession will be very important. If Russia are to realise their dreams and lift the golden trophy at their own turf they will have to pull another rabbit out of the hat, while Croatia just need to continue the great form they have shown to get here. Needless to say, the Croatian team are favourites but this is the World Cup for surprises so stay tuned!
