World Cup Semi Finals - All European!
Only four games remain of the World Cup and those are in fact the most exciting and important of them all. Four teams remain, all of which have been very impressive so far in the tournament and they make promises of great entertainment for the remainder of the World Cup. Keep reading for a quick look at the two semi-final games that lie before us and will determine how the biggest game in world football will look this time round.
France vs Belgium: 10th of July at 20:00 CET
France is a team that have really been gathering pace as they have progressed in the World Cup. Their group stage performances gave results but didn’t really scream world champions, their efforts in the knockout phases have on the other hand been a lot more impressive, a highly entertaining 4-3 victory over Argentina led to a class act 2-0 win over Uruguay which in turn gave a World Cup semi-final spot. Now it remains to be seen if they can step up an additional notch as they face a very tough Belgian side. Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne and Courtois have all lived up to their reputation in this tournament and been decisive in their team’s progression. The group stage was an easy challenge for the red devils who won every single game before delivering an awesome comeback against Japan and then beat Brazil to land a spot in the semis. With the attacking powers that both teams possess and the great determination they’ve shown getting here we can expect yet another highly entertaining matchup on Tuesday. The bookies hold France as slight favourites but at this stage you can’t really call a winner before the game is finished. With the way Belgium have performed in this tournament they look like equals to the French and could very well surprise them and take themselves to the finals. No matter what, we will be witnessing a great game full of attacking football between two giants!
Croatia vs England: 11th of July at 20:00 CET
Croatia and England are two teams few expected to see at this stage of the tournament. But nobody can say they don’t deserve to be here as they’ve both delivered some very impressive performances leading up to the semis. Croatia had a solid group stage run, beating Argentina 3-0 before overcoming both Denmark and Russia in penalty shootouts in the knockouts. You can therefore say that the Croats have been dependent on at least a little bit of luck to get here, but the quality of this team should never be doubted and with a Luka Modric tearing it up in every game they can control and decide any match. England also had a rather comfortable group stage, even though they were defeated by Belgium in a game in which they rested many key players. They then had to deal with an ancient penalty shootout ghost when they made their way past Colombia before showing their strength against Sweden in the quarters. These are two teams that love keeping the ball in the team and the battle for possession will therefore be vital for both sides. Up front the Croats will need to look out for the tournament’s top scorer in Harry Kane, but they have also shown that they have a lot dangermen in front of goal themselves, coming from all positions of the pitch. England are the favourites but as we mentioned earlier it’s pretty much impossible to call any results before it’s all over. Things happen so quickly at this level and one individual mistake could decide it all. It’s going to be an amazing clash on Wednesday as two very well-matched teams go head to head.
